Why Lost Gulch Shines for Portrait Photography

Mountains as far as the eye can see

This location is a popular spot for portraits, as well as sunset watchers, and it is easy to see why. The views go on for miles and miles of mountains peaks. The location can make you feel like you’re on the top of the world. The sunset seems to wrap around you and highlights the mountains in a magnificent light.

Short Walk

The lookout is right there off the parking lot. You really don’t have to go far from your car at all to get the best views this location has to offer. Unfortunately, it is not the most accessible walk. It is pretty rocky and can be icy. But is a very short one.

Why This Location Might Be For You

I’d recommend this location for you if:

  • you want magnificent mountain views.

  • you want an epic sunset location.

  • you don’t want anyone to second guess that you’re in Colorado.

  • you can handle the rocky terrain. In some cases, there are boulders you need to make it around to get to the primary lookout.

  • you’re okay with being flexible with small children. The primary lookout isn’t good for young children, but as you can see in the image to the left there are other options when small children are involved.

  • you’re prepared for some wind. It can get quite gusty at this location

  • you’re okay driving on windy roads. It is at the top of Flagstaff Mountain.

  • you are flexible with switching location midway into your session. The mountain views are amazing here, but this location is a one trick pony. It can easily be paired with Chautauqua though.
