Want the Boulder Flatirons as the backdrop to your maternity photo session?

If you want your maternity photo session to scream Boulder, then a Boulder Flatiron backdrop is your best bet. There is no backdrop more iconic in the Boulder area. But the flatirons can prove difficult with portrait photography. As I mentioned in my blog post about Chautauqua Boulder Family Photography, the Flatirons can present problems with the setting sun. Depending on the time of year, the sun can disappear as much as an hour and a half early in Chautauqua. This means less golden hour light to make for amazing portrait lighting. Fortunately though, Chautauqua isn’t the only option for a gorgeous Flatiron backdrop. And one of the best options is still in Boulder town at this beautiful location.

Why This Location Shines for Maternity Photography

Boulder Flatirons

I think I’ve already made it clear that the best part of this location is the views of the Boulder Flatirons. If you ask me, they are more photogenic here than in Boulder town. They are at the perfect distance here to capture beautifully in the background and the sun sets a little later at this location than in Boulder town. We view them directly west, which means we capture the setting sun right behind them. And they stretch both north and south from this location, so multiple angles will capture these beautiful geologic features.

Easily Accessible

It’s about a five minute walk to capture these amazing Flatiron views. The walk is an easy one along a small gravel pathway that winds through the meadow along the flatirons. To capture amazing photos, you don’t need to go far from the pathway. In fact, you can capture beautiful photos right on the pathway itself.

Wildflowers

In late summer (late July to August), the meadow in front of the Flatirons is filled with wildflowers. These are weather reliant (a wetter summer provides more flowers), but if we do catch them, they do add a little extra to the photos. Even when there aren’t wildflowers, the beautiful meadow produces amazing texture that works so well for portraits. And during the winter you might catch a field of snow that frames the snow capped Flatirons beautifully.
